The dimensions of your gym or power rack can vary widely. Make sure you check the dimensions of the rack you are interested in before buying it to avoid costly returns or a gym that is too small.
Minimum Footprint by Rack Type
A half rack typically requires around 1.2m x 1.5m of floor space, whilst a full power rack would be around 1.5m x 2m. Add some extra room to this minimum footprint for cable stacks and other items and use the manufacturer’s listed dimensions as a rough guide.
Allow for Barbell Overhang
Additionally you should consider the length of your Olympic barbell (2.2m) extending out from the sides of the rack. Allow 60cm of clearance on each side of the rack so we’d recommend approximately 3.4m width for our racks to be safely used.
Check Your Ceiling Height
Make sure you have enough overhead clearance for overhead pressing and for pull-up bars. A minimum of 30 cm (12″) is needed between the top of the rack and the ceiling. However, if you are very tall, or plan to press standing over the top of the rack, then more may be needed.
Plan Walkway Clearance
Allow 1m and above for safe walkway access past each open side of the rack. Refer to the sport facility design guidelines for strength training area layout and safe access ways between pieces of equipment to prevent injury.
Consider Floor Loading
Remember that a fully loaded power rack can weigh more than 500 kg. Therefore, also check the floor loading of your gym and use thick rubber matting to distribute the pressure.
