Traditional Irish symbols

If you’re looking to celebrate St Patrick’s Day or hoping to find a gift for an Ireland fanatic, then you can’t go wrong choosing something with a traditional Irish symbol on it. Here are some to look out for:

Trinity Knot

Also known as the Triquetra or Witches Knot, it is said to symbolise many things but all of them are Celtic in origin. For Christians, it is the symbol of the Holy Trinity. For others it symbolises the natural forces of the earth – air, earth and water. It can also be used to represent life, death and rebirth. It is often used in necklaces and earrings.

Claddagh

This world-famous design is quintessentially Irish and hugely important to Irish culture. It is said that the iconic design features love as in the heart, loyalty for the crown and friendship as seen with the hands holding the heart. The design features heavily in Celtic jewellery, most famously the Claddagh rings but is also seen on necklaces and bracelets.

Aran Sweaters

Originally from the isle of Aran, this woollen jumper is famously associated with Ireland. It makes the perfect gift and is incredibly soft and warm. Find out more about Aran Sweaters from a site like Shamrock Gifts, providers of a range of stunning  Aran Sweaters.

Tree of Life

This is another symbol dating back to the Celts who thought that trees were the bringers of all life. It can also be thought to relate to the importance of the family tree. It is commonly found in Celtic jewellery but can also be seen woven into Aran jumpers.
