French knitting is great fun. Although it may seem tricky to start with, by using a few tips and techniques you will soon be well on your way to creating your first project.
Knitting and French Knitting
As well as being a fun craft in its own right, French knitting is also a great introduction to knitting, particularly for children.
However, if you are keen to try knitting as well as French knitting, a knitting kit is a good way to get started. These are available from specialist retailers like Wool Couture.
Start French Knitting
French knitting does not need much special equipment. Other than some yarn and a bobbin, a crochet hook is also recommended to help with unhooking the stitches. A hook of 2-4 mm is likely to be the best size.
Another bit of kit you may find useful is a metal darning needle. This will help you thread the spool as the wide eye is easy to thread, while the extra weight will help the thread fall easily through the hole.

Use the Right Yarn
Knitters are probably used to getting good results from any kind of yarn, but in French knitting, you are best off using a cotton or polyester yarn. Wools and acrylics are best avoided as their fibres have a tendency to get stuck or pulled.
Avoid any threads that are fuzzy as the friction will make them pull more. For good results, try jersey or a tightly spun yarn.
Loose Loops
If your loops are too tight, you will find it hard to wedge your crochet hook into them. Loose loops will make French knitting much easier.
To avoid the knit tube clogging up the top, you can pull it downwards by tugging on the yarn. This will help keep the tension even, leading to even stitches.
Like any new skill, French knitting may take a few attempts to get right, but it is a fun craft that is well worth persevering with.
