The People Working Behind the Scenes on a Film Set

Behind the Scenes on a Film Set

When you go to the cinema to watch a film and stay to watch the end credits you will see many names on the list – this is because getting a film from the production to the big screen takes a great deal of people, and each has their own important role in the film.

Although the main people that you see will be the film stars themselves, here are some of the people who work behind the scenes to ensure that the film makes it to the cinema…

Sound Specialists – The sound mixer will be the boss of the sound department, and they make sure that all the audio is correct for the film. They will have a team of people that work with them in various roles to create the perfect sound, as well as the boom operator of course who needs to make sure that the boom is out of shot at all times!

Stunts – If you are watching an action film, the chances are there is going to be a stunt department! Stunts need to be carefully planned and coordinated so that they look realistic to the viewer but also to reduce the chances of anyone on the film set hurting themselves. From the special effects coordinator to the stunt actors themselves, this could involve chase scenes, underwater action and fight scenes, all which need careful planning. Of course, there will also be film set medics like this https://outdoormedicalsolutions.co.uk on hand if anything were to cause an injury.

Costume – In order to make a film believable, the costumes need to be right. Whether it is a film set in a certain time period, or they wish to portray something about the character, the costumes often will do much of the talking. A costume designer works closely with those in hair and makeup to make sure that they get the costumes perfect. Once on set, the costumes need to be stored and coordinated to ensure that they are available when necessary.

Lighting – The lighting in a film also helps to set the scene- it can be used to communicate the time of day, or a certain atmosphere, such as in a horror or an action film. The lighting roles include the Best Boy who is in charge of the electrics on set and all the wiring and cables, and the Gaffer who plans the lighting and ensures that it is right for the scene.
