ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is also known as Motor Neuron Disease. It is a neurodegenerative condition that sees the loss of motor neurons in the body and the loss of control of voluntary muscles. Those who are diagnosed with the condition will need support from Mobility Aids like the ones that you can get from companies like in order to move around.

The film looks at Hawking’s work on black holes and how his diagnosis of motor neuron disease begins to affect his life. When he was first diagnosed, he was given the prognosis of only two years left to live. He incredibly went on to live for much longer than that, fathering three children and researching some of the world’s most astounding discoveries.

As the storyline progresses we see the strain that his diagnosis has on his relationship with Jane and how his newfound fame puts even more pressure on the couple. It is after a bout of pneumonia that a tracheotomy needs to be performed, and Hawking is left mute, only being able to use a speech board to communicate with others. This, however, does not stop him from sharing his discoveries with the world and inspiring generations of physicists.
