If you want to know how the decoration of your house will be, you can print it in 3D

What better than to preach by example, Craig Broady thought. This company engineer FormLabs, dedicated to the manufacture of 3D printers, has decided to go one step further in solutions interior design, and instead of just having a screen representation of your home, has decided print 3D.

Broady told in his blog how moving to a new apartment gave him the perfect opportunity to study what would be the distribution of furniture and accessories in his new home. Best of all, this study allowed him to buy all the objects in a way that would fit perfectly with what he was looking for. Print all 3D made planning their future home design perfect was.

Redecorate your life in 3D

The project, which he dubbed “Tiny Town” consisted of a process that began with the taking of measures of that future floor both the rooms and the position of elements such as doors, windows or radiators. He used OnShape to bring to the screen a true 3D representation of that apartment.

It exported this model to DXF, the format used in AutoCAD, and took a sheet of cardboard to print that “cutout design” that formed the basic structure outside the apartment. From there he played “play the houses” and adding furniture, a process in which the 3D impression came full.

He measured his furniture and completed these measures with manufacturers specifications and then create CAD models and print them in 3D in a Form 2 printer, and after several hours of 3D printing (the pictures on the walls the printed on plain paper at the same scale, 1:25, to give even more realism to the final model) achieved a model that he thought perfect for his house.

I was ready for a move where everything would have its pre-set location. As Broady explained, “this project demonstrates how quickly someone can get an idea and make it a reality with 3D printing.” Although these processes apply to something like a design of an apartment can not compensate for all – even as a distraction is an excellent idea – the idea could be applied to more ambitious architectural models easily, says the author.
